KUCHING: The Sarawak Governor, Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar has extended his congratulations to Senator Datuk Awang Bemee Awang Ali Basah on his appointment as the 21st President of the Senate.

According to Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi, the appointment was significant as it was made on July 22, coinciding with the date in which Sarawak attained its self-government 61 years ago.

As a former Dewan Negara President, he expressed his hope that Datuk Awang Bemee would continue to assist the Federal government’s effort to continue the reform of Parliament, and to enhance the check-and-balance mechanism of which Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi had judiciously laid before his resignation on January 19, 2024.

“I am indeed happy to the see that the Prime Minister (Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim) has chosen a Sarawak leader again to be nominated and eventually endorsed by the members of the Senate to become its 21st President.

“Datuk Awang Bemee’s appointment is indeed significant as it also coincides with the date in which Sarawak attained its self-government 61 years ago on July 22, 1963, the date preceding the formation of Malaysia on September 16, 1963,” he said in a statement today.

Datuk Awang Bemee was appointed the 21st Senate President to replace Datuk Mutang Tagal who passed away on May 10 this year.

A former Nangka Assemblyman for three terms from 1996 to 2011, he is also an experienced legal practitioner, handling civil and criminal cases in all courts up to the Federal Court since being admitted as an advocate and solicitor by the High Court of Borneo in 1984.
