SIBU: The 722 Run For Sarawak has been recognised as a key event for Sarawak Day.
Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing, and Local Government, Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee, emphasised the importance of organising Sarawak Day programmes more frequently and involving the community annually to deepen public understanding of Sarawak's history.
“This run brings together people from all walks of life, showcasing unity and solidarity within our diverse Sarawak community, regardless of cultural or religious differences,” he said this when met by reporters after officiating the event, which saw over 800 participants at Tun Zaidi Adruce Stadium on 21 July.
He added that the event serves as an opportunity to educate Sarawakians about their history, particularly why the state gained self-governance on 22 July 1963, tracing back to its roots as an independent entity since 1841.
“As we celebrate 722, it is crucial to cover these historical aspects.
“This will prompt people to ask questions and gain insights into our history,” he said.
Additionally, Datuk Michael Tiang suggested integrating Sarawak's history into school curricula.
“If it is not feasible to include Sarawak’s history in national textbooks, we should start by incorporating it into local school textbooks in Sarawak.
“We can implement it as an additional programme or subject in Sarawakian schools. I believe the Sarawak government can manage this effectively,” he proposed. -UKASnews
