KUCHING: Members of the public are called on to help the deaf community so that they are not marginalised in the current development especially in Sarawak.

Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Professor Dr Sim Kui Hian said that the Sarawak government will continue its commitment to improve the lives of deaf individuals in the state.

"There are about 3,000 deaf people in Sarawak and about 10 percent of them are members of the Sarawak Society for the Deaf (SSD).

"It is important for them to do this intervention programme, because they did not choose to be born deaf, so it is important for them to do the appropriate support program through the SSD.

"They can actually live independently and contribute to Sarawak in many ways," he said.

He said this after officiating the SSD Charity Food Festival 2024 held at the Association of Churches Sarawak here on Sunday.

The fundraising event will contribute towards the renovation of the SSD building, especially its video editing room amd Malaysian sign language classroom, a new cafe, deaf tuition and mini park, as well as support activities of deaf people.
