SIBU: Village and community leaders (KMKK) play a crucial role as the 'eyes and ears' between the government and the people of the community.

Sarawak's Deputy Premier, Datuk Amar Prof Dr Sim Kui Hian, emphasised that KMKK is an integral part of the government providing essential services to the people.

"You must be aware of the current political situation in the country, as friends can become foes.

"This not only reminds me of what the late Governor of Sarawak, Allahyarham Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, cautioned - Don't just listen to what people say, observe their behaviour because behaviour doesn't change.

"Also, be alert of online scams, viral fake news, and it's crucial to verify the validity of the news," he said in his Facebook post for the Handover Ceremony of Notices and Appointment Certificates for KMKK for N.53 Bawang Assan here, on Friday.

Meanwhile, Datuk Amar Prof Dr Sim, who is also the Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government, said it is time for Bawang Assan to pursue development.

"With the announcement by Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Openg recently about the special fund for the Rural Transformation Project (RTP) for Bawang Assan, this is clear evidence that the Premier does not want Bawang Assan to left behind," he said.

In the ceremony, Datuk Amar Dr Sim presented re-appointment certificates to 50 members of KMKK for the DUN Bawang Assan.

Ting Jack Sing was appointed as the Headman, while Chew Hoo Kiong was appointed as the Kapitan in the DUN Bawang Assan along with 48 other Village Chiefs.

Also present at the ceremony were Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee, Political Secretary to the Sarawak Premier Romeo Christopher Tegong, Chairman of Sibu Municipal Council (MPS) Clarence Ting Ing Horh and other invited guests. -UKASnews
