MIRI: Sarawak recorded an increase in drug arrests in 2023 with 10,365 cases compared to 9,092 cases in 2022.

In Miri alone, a total of 852 cases were reported in 2022 and increased to 1,098 in 2023.

The Speaker of the National Assembly, Senator Datuk Mutang Tagal said, the value of drugs seized in Sarawak in 2022 will be RM12,230,867 and in 2023 will amount to RM142,458,470.38.

"Most of the reported cases are only a small part, we cannot rely on statistical data alone to deal with the problem, the real problem is in the villages, longhouses and rural areas," he said in the Sarawak Drug Rehabilitation and Kenosis Student Dialogue Program organized by Kenosis Sarawak (Private Drug Rehabilitation Center) in Miri on Saturday.

He added that the problem of drug addiction is a very big problem because addicts suffer from pain and are in dire need of help.

"It takes a very long time before an addict decides to undergo a rehabilitation session after suffering for so long.

"The recovery process is a long and continuous process with love and discipline, care and experience," he said again. - UKASnews
