MIRI: Qualified graduates of the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) will also have the opportunity to pursue free education at universities and higher education institutions owned by the Sarawak government in 2026.
Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg, said this measure ensures that no native Sarawakian misses the chance to further their education at the university level.
Moreover, he stated that the Sarawak Government continues to recognise the UEC certificate and provide assistance to Chinese schools in the state.
"Sarawak's education policy aims to further enhance human capital to engage in the new economy for the development of Sarawak.
"We have recognised the UEC, and in 2026 we will provide free education to the people of Sarawak.
"This means qualified UEC graduates will also receive free education at Sarawak-owned universities," he said.
He made these remarks during the inauguration ceremony of the New Administrative Block at Pei Min Secondary School here on Thursday.
The Sarawak Premier added that educational institutions at all levels need to emphasise the learning of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).
He explained that this effort is to assist the Sarawak Government in exploring new economies and technologies that still lack skilled manpower.
"Sarawak also plans to collaborate with Fudan University Shanghai from China to establish its branch campus, the Faculty of Biomedical Sciences.
"This aligns with the establishment of the Sarawak Infectious Disease Centre (SIDC), which will lead biodiversity research in Sarawak for the production of new medicines and vaccines," he added.
Also in attendance were Sarawak Deputy Premier, Datuk Amar Prof Dr Sim Kui Hian, Sarawak State Secretary, Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, Sarawak Deputy Minister of Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development, Datuk Dr Ripin Lamat, Sarawak State Education Department Director, Datu Dr Azhar Ahmad, Miri Mayor, Adam Yii Siew Sang, and other honoured guests.-UKASnews
