Shell MDS Produces Butter From Gas, Becomes World's First Manufacturer

KUCHING: Shell Middle Distillate Synthesis (MDS) Malaysia has introduced the production of butter synthesised from gas, positioning the company as the world's first commercial producer.

Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg, said the creation of this new product marks a significant advancement in food technology and industrial development in Sarawak.

He explained that the product, made from high-quality wax, underscores the versatility of gas-to-liquid (GTL) technology and has the potential to revolutionise various economic sectors, including food.

"There are many new products and technologies that will sustain the gas-based industry as a food resource.

"Once internationally certified, butter derived from gas can benefit the food industry," he said.

He made these remarks while speaking at the 30th Anniversary Celebration Dinner of Shell MDS (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd at the Hilton Kuching Hotel here on Wednesday.

Datuk Patinggi Abang Zohari also highlighted the importance of gas as a raw material for the petrochemical sector, which creates jobs and boosts the economy.

He emphasised the establishment of Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros) with the aim of ensuring active local involvement in the industry.

"The Sarawak government will remain your partner in the future. Of course, we have new players, including national oil companies as partners.

"As we all know, today we have explored another new gas field. Perhaps year by year, we might discover other fields," he added.
