Transport Minister Leads Study Visit To China On River Management And Innovation

KUCHING : Sarawak Minister for Transport, Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin,  led a benchmarking and study visit to China from 25th to 31st March 2024. 

The purpose of this study visit is to gain valuable insights and expand our understanding of China's innovative approaches to river management and transportation.

During the visit, Dato Sri Lee made a courtesy visit to Dato’ Norman Muhamad, Ambassador of Malaysia to the People’s Republic of China, and also visited the Global Sustainable Transport Innovation and Knowledge Centre (GSTIKC) in Beijing. 

GSTIKC is dedicated to advancing the Global Development Initiative and supporting the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals (SGD).

Dato Sri Lee also visited the Tianjin Research Institute for Water Transport Engineering (TIWTE) of Ministry of Transport, where he was briefed on ongoing research initiatives and toured the institute's research facilities and laboratories.

Furthermore, Dato Sri Lee and his delegation explored the barrage of the Haihe River and Haihe River's Sluice Gates Management Department in Tianjin, receiving detailed insights into the management of the Haihe Barrage and innovative digitalization initiatives.

The delegation also had the opportunity to visit CCCC Tianjin Dredging Company (TDC) and Tianjin Port, where they received comprehensive briefings on projects and digital transformation initiatives.

Following their visit to Tianjin, the delegation proceeded to Yichang, China, to explore the Three Gorges Dam, Barrage, and shiplocks, receiving a comprehensive briefing and embarking on a site visit.

Dato Sri Lee also extended a courtesy visit to Ma Zejiang, the Mayor of Yichang Municipal People's Government, discussing cooperation between Sarawak and China in transportation, tourism, and green energy sectors.

Before returning to Malaysia, Dato Sri Lee met with Wang Junjin, the CEO of Juneyao Airlines and the Board Chairman of Juneyao Group, to explore the possibility of extending their service into Sarawak.

The Sarawak delegation included Deputy Minister for Transport II (Riverine & Marine), Dato Henry Harry Jinep; Board Member of Sarawak Rivers Board (SRB) Chieng Jin Ek; Deputy Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Transport Sarawak (MOTS) Selamat Jati Yanjah; Section Head for Riverine and Maritime MOTS Teo Swee Ann; SRB Controller Lt. Col. Ding Tiew Wong; Board Member of SRB Captain Ting Hien Liong and officers from MOTS and SRB. -UKASnews
