SPAOH: Rural folks are urged to be discerning when coming across sensational postings on social media especially involving top political leaders.

According to Sarawak Deputy Premier, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, in the current era, some parties may misuse modern technologies including Artificial Intelligence (AI) to create false narratives.

He said such false news can result in confusion, suspicion, hatred, and rejection.

“This AI technology can be a blessing and at the same time a curse, becoming very disruptive and destructive.

“We had come across (such postings) prior to the recent Gawai Dayak celebration with American President, Joe Biden (portrayed to be) conveying his Gawai Dayak greeting.

“Similarly, there was also another clip where the former President, Donald Trump had done the same thing.

“What’s both stunning and mind-boggling is that both of them had spoken in perfect Iban for the short message,” he said during a Bukit Saban Gawai ‘Ngiling Bidai’ gathering here, on Sunday.

Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah stressed that this was the beauty and at the same time, an absolute danger of such technology if misused.

“Imagine if such technology were exploited during the campaigning period of any general election.

“So, I advise for all mobile phone owners to be very discerning when coming across such fake news postings,” he explained.
