KUCHING: Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, announced that the Sarawak government approved a new project to build the second bridge in Batu Kawa last year under the 12th Malaysia Plan Mid-Term Review (2023).

This massive and significant development project costs RM160 million and includes the construction of a second Batu Kawa Bridge across Sungai Sarawak and a road with a total length of more than 5 kilometers.

Datuk Amar Dr Sim highlighted that this is a development plan by the Sarawak government and was approved by Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg, as a way to alleviate the traffic congestion in the Batu Kawa area.

Therefore, he hopes Members of Parliament from Sarawak can also fight for more development projects in fairness to the state because the Federal Government collects all the road taxes and therefore should build more roads to help ease the bad traffic congestions.

Earlier, the Batu Kawah Assemblyman was briefed by Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR) Director, Ir Dr Cassidy Morris, on the project on Saturday.

The Sarawak JKR will implement this project through four stages: consultants appointment, geological survey, land acquisition, and public bidding/tender.

According to the plan by the Sarawak JKR, the new dual carriageway will start from the existing Jalan Batu Kawa/Matang traffic light connection at Moyan and continue across Sungai Sarawak, joining the traffic light junction at Tan Sri Wee Boon Ping Road and Stephen Yong Road.

Datuk Amar Dr Sim added that the best way to address issues arising from rapid housing development, population growth, and increased traffic is by constructing more alternative roads to improve traffic flow.

Additionally, Datuk Amar Dr Sim mentioned that a 3-kilometer link road from Stephen Yong Road traffic lights through Segudup to Matang will also be constructed soon.

These new roads will definitely ease road congestion and reduce driving time for many who live in and around Batu Kawa.-UKASnews
