KUCHING: Sarawak is set to make history with the construction of a world-class airport in Tanjung Embang, which will become an iconic landmark and symbol of the region's progress towards developed state status by 2030.

Designed with the latest generation concept and smart technology, the airport is expected to not only match, but surpass the facilities of the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) in terms of design, efficiency and sustainability.

Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg, said the mega project would be among the state's three major infrastructure agendas to be implemented by 2030, marking a major shift in Sarawak's economic and logistics development strategy towards the aviation ecosystem of the future.

“The airport model is based on the design of the Doha International Airport which emphasises the concept of a modern complex with comprehensive facilities.

"This project involves the construction of two runways, a main building, high-tech IT facilities and an international-class access road,” he said.

He said this when speaking at the Sarawak Bumiputera Consulting Engineers (GJPBS) Anniversary Ceremony & Engineer Awards 2025 here on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Datuk Patinggi Abang Zohari added that the mega project will require various consulting services and engineering expertise as it cannot be implemented by a single contractor.

"This airport is not just an airline terminal, but a complete complex with ancillary facilities.

"When completed, it will be the best airport in Malaysia with more sophisticated facilities than the old generation KLIA," he explained.

Meanwhile, he also stressed that the construction of this new airport will drive the state's economic growth through new job opportunities and supporting economic activities such as construction services, building materials, and information technology.
