KUCHING: The Sarawak Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) continues to strengthen its efforts towards sustainable and innovative development through the implementation of various technology-driven and innovation-based initiatives, as well as a shift in mindset aligned with the Sarawak Maju Makmur 2030 vision.

Sarawak Deputy Premier, Datuk Amar Dr. Sim Kui Hian, said DID plays a vital role as a technical agency in ensuring that the state’s physical development is carried out sustainably, taking into account the balance of the natural environment.

“DID is a technical agency entrusted with a major responsibility.
“There are only a few technical agencies that are still officially recognised by the Malaysian government, such as the Public Works Department (JKR) and DID,” he said during the Sarawak Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) 2025 Appreciation Night held here on Friday evening.

He said DID’s role has become increasingly significant in addressing the challenges posed by climate change and urban development, which require new approaches in the implementation of technical work, including the concept of “naturalisation” in drainage and irrigation systems.

“Transformation begins with how we think, with our own mindset. As I mentioned earlier, during our time as students, none of us knew about climate change or understood its importance,” he added.

Datuk Amar Dr. Sim also expressed his appreciation to the staff of DID Sarawak for their dedication and professionalism in fulfilling their responsibilities, making the department one of the key pillars of sustainable and resilient state development.

The event also saw the presentation of certificates, plaques, tokens of appreciation, and contributions to DID Sarawak personnel, presented by Datuk Amar Dr. Sim Kui Hian as a symbol of recognition for their service and contributions towards the state’s development.

Also present were Datuk Amar Dr. Sim’s wife, Datin Amar Enn Ong Slok Ean; Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government (Public Health and Housing), Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee, Director of the Sarawak Department of Irrigation and Drainage, Datu Ir. Ts. Ahmad Denney Ahmad Fauzi, and his wife, Datin Rosnah Tangkong, as well as senior ministry officials and DID Sarawak staff. -UKASnews
