KUCHING: The Premier Debate Challenge ended on a high note as outstanding young debaters from across Sarawak were recognised for their talent and confidence during the prize presentation ceremony officiated by Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development (MEITD) Sarawak, Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn.
The event celebrated students who excelled in both English and Bahasa Melayu categories, reflecting the state’s commitment to encouraging language proficiency and critical thinking among youths.
SMK Lutong, Miri emerged as the Champion in the English Debate Premier Challenge after demonstrating strong teamwork and persuasive delivery throughout the competition.
The team’s excellence was further highlighted when Leann Yii Zhen from SMK Lutong received the Best Debater award. SMK Chung Hua Miri secured the First Runner-Up, while Yayasan Sarawak International Secondary School and SM Sains Kuching Utara Padawan shared the Second Runner-Up position.
In the Bahasa Melayu debate, SM Sains Miri was named Champion, showcasing impressive articulation and understanding of current issues. Rania Zulaikha Radzami, also from SM Sains Miri, was named Pendebat Terbaik (Best Debater).
SMK Santubong placed as First Runner-Up, while SMK Kubong and Yayasan Sarawak International Secondary School shared the Second Runner-Up spot.
Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn presented prizes to the winners, accompanied by Permanent Secretary of MEITD, Datu Adana Jed.
Dato Sri Roland Sagah commended the students’ efforts and encouraged them to continue improving their communication skills, saying that debating helps develop confidence, leadership and teamwork among young people.
Also present were Head of Education Division, Donald Henry Nohed, Chief Assistant Director (Student Development Sector), Hazali Madihi, Sarawak State Education Department (JPNS), and Director of Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka Sarawak Branch, Dr. Azizul Ismail. -UKASnews
