KUCHING: Sarawak has achieved another significant success in its efforts to become a global leader in the high-tech industry through the strategic partnership between SMD Semiconductor and Rebellions Inc. from South Korea.
Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg said the partnership reflects the confidence of international companies in Sarawak's capabilities as a trusted technology partner in the semiconductor and artificial intelligence (AI) ecosystem.
“This partnership represents another milestone for SMD Semiconductor following its earlier collaboration with the United Kingdom on advanced sustainable semiconductor manufacturing, workforce training and new technology development.
“This achievement has laid the foundation for Sarawak to align with Rebellions’ innovative High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) and optimised data flow architecture led by the chip,” he said.
He said this in a press conference after receiving a courtesy call from Rebellions Inc. Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Sung Hyun Park at the Satria Pertiwi Complex, here, Monday.
Datuk Patinggi Abang Zohari explained that Rebellions is a leader in AI accelerator technology with expertise in HBM which enables the production of high-speed and energy-efficient chips.
He said that through this synergy, SMD Semiconductor and Rebellions will collaborate in technology transfer, workforce training and development of high-performance chips for the regional market.
According to the Sarawak Premier, this collaboration is in line with the state’s vision to develop an ‘Integrated Longhouse Silicon Valley’ and support the Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, which emphasises economic growth based on innovation and technology.
He also shared that in the next five to 10 years, the space industry will be an important field that will require a large amount of chips and digital communications in line with the advancement of technology and satellite functions.
He said that the ecosystem that will be developed with the support of Rebellions is expected to be a major catalyst for Sarawak's efforts to strengthen its position as a regional high-tech hub.
Also present were Sarawak Financial Secretary and Chairman of SMD Semiconductor Sdn Bhd, Dato Sri Dr. Wan Lizozman Wan Omar, SMD Semiconductor Board Members, Datu John Wayne Chamberlain Sirau and Dato (Dr.) Salihin Abang, Deputy Sarawak Secretary (Economic Planning & Development), Dato Sri Dr. Muhammad Abdullah Zaidel, Permanent Secretary to the Ministry for Education, Innovation and Talent Development, Datu Adana Jed, and SMD Semiconductor CEO, Shariman Jamil. -UKASnews
