KUCHING: The state government will expedite efforts to rebuild the Bidayuh Longhouse that was recently destroyed in a fire at the Sarawak Cultural Village, to ensure that this important cultural heritage can be restored.

Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, said the matter will be brought before the Cabinet to seek approval and special funding for the reconstruction of the structure.

“I will personally bring this matter to the Cabinet, as the cultural village falls under the purview of SEDC,” he said.

He said this during a press conference following his visit to the Bidayuh Longhouse at the Sarawak Cultural Village, which was gutted by fire on Saturday.

According to him, he has taken note of the incident and wants to ensure that the damage is repaired and reconstruction work begins as soon as possible.

“I have taken note of the situation and I want to see the damage repaired or the structure rebuilt,” he said.

He explained that based on preliminary investigations by the authorities, the fire is believed to have been caused by an electrical short circuit.

However, the lower structure of the building remains intact and can be used in the rebuilding process.

He further emphasised that reconstruction work will be prioritised, especially in view of the upcoming Visit Malaysia Year next year.

“I would say as soon as possible, more so because next year is Visit Malaysia Year.

“If we can complete it in about a year or slightly more, that will be our goal,” he explained.

Meanwhile, Dato Sri Abdul Karim also informed that the Sarawak Cultural Village continues to operate as usual, with both local and international visitors still frequenting the iconic tourism destination. -UKASnews
