KUCHING: The 40th anniversary of the Sarawak Artists Society marks a significant milestone in its ongoing effort to nurture local artistic talent in the region.
Mayor of Kuching North City Hall (DBKU), Dato Hilmy Othman, said the society’s dedication has directly strengthened cultural appreciation in Sarawak by showcasing it through art.
“Art is not merely a reflection of the past; it is a force that revitalises tradition, ensuring it remains relevant in the modern world,” he said.
He made these remarks when officiating the 40th Annual Art Exhibition of the Sarawak Artists Society here on Friday.
It was understood that the exhibition successfully brought together 44 local, indigenous, and international artists under the theme ‘Heritage Reloaded’.
Meanwhile, Dato Hilmy noted that Kuching’s recognition as a World Craft Council City of Crafts in 2019 stands as proof of the city’s commitment to preserving heritage while fostering creative innovation.
In this regard, he reaffirmed DBKU’s commitment to continue supporting art and cultural initiatives, including the Borneo International Islamic Arts and Digital Technology Expo 2026, as part of efforts to strengthen the local creative industry.
Also present was DBKU Deputy Director, Ruzaimeir Malek. -UKASnews
