KUCHING: Sarawak's success in gaining international recognition from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) proves the state's ability to manage and preserve environmental treasures wisely based on the principles of sustainability.
Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg, expressed appreciation to the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) and all parties involved for the historic success which has put Sarawak on the world map.
“It shows that we have been able to manage our environment, our earth wisely, as a result of this success.
“It also reflects that Sarawak is a state that not only talks, but also takes action wholeheartedly,” he said when speaking at the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) Annual Dinner here on Friday.
According to Datuk Patinggi Abang Zohari, the recognition of Gua Niah as a UNESCO site not only adds value to the tourism sector, but also makes the area a world-class archaeological research centre, as the discovery of ancient human history at the site is very significant to the evolution of human civilisation in the region.
At the same time, he said, the recognition of the Sarawak Delta Geopark also strengthens the state’s reputation as a leader in sustainable development, with the area currently in the process of achieving UNESCO Global Geopark status.
Also present at the ceremony were Sarawak Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Urban Development, Datuk Len Talif Salleh and SFC General Manager, Abang Arabi Abang Aimran.- UKASnews
