SINGAPORE: Sarawak is offering a range of additional incentives to investors, particularly companies from Singapore, on top of those already provided by the Federal Government through the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA).
Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg said these additional incentives include more competitive land sizes and prices, as well as reasonable premium charges.
According to him, Sarawak also offers energy tariff concessions to investors, making it the region with the lowest energy tariff rates in Malaysia.
“Depending on the nature and scope of investment, these incentives will be negotiated between the relevant state authorities, particularly Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) and the Ministry of Urban Development and Natural Resources, to strike a balance and attract strategic investments to Sarawak,” he said when speaking to the media after officiating the Sarawak Mega Fair 2025 at the Suntec Singapore Convention and Exhibition Centre on Thursday.
In another development, the Sarawak Premier revealed that a principle agreement has been reached between Sarawak and Singapore to supply green energy through a designated corridor.
To that end, he said, Sarawak aims to supply one gigawatt of electricity to Singapore by 2032.
“We are currently engaged in tripartite discussions involving the governments of Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia to construct an undersea power cable, either directly to Singapore or through Malaysian waters, before connecting onwards to Singapore.
“Indonesia has also responded positively, although discussions are still in their final stages,” he added.
Further elaborating, Datuk Patinggi Abang Zohari said regional energy integration efforts within ASEAN are actively progressing, in tandem with economic growth and the increasing energy demand across the region.
“Some countries have an energy surplus that can be shared within the regional bloc, similar to the European model. ASEAN is now discussing power grid interconnectivity, and Sarawak is strategically positioned for this initiative.
“Sarawak covers only about 40,000 square kilometres with a population of 2.8 million, comparable to Nordic countries in terms of potential for energy sharing,” he explained.
He added that Sarawak remains open to investments from any country, including the Middle East, China, and the United States, particularly in renewable energy sectors such as hydrogen and new energy technologies.
Also present at the press conference were Sarawak Deputy Premiers Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, and Datuk Amar Professor Dr. Sim Kui Hian, Speaker of the Sarawak Legislative Assembly Tan Sri Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar, Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Sarawak Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, and Chairman of the STATOS Board of Directors Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Morshidi Abdul Ghani. -UKASnews
