KUCHING: Sarawak’s vibrant creative spirit took centre stage on Sunday afternoon as Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg, represented by the Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, officially launched the seventh edition of the What About Kuching (WAK) Festival 2025 at Pengkalan Sapi.
Delivering the Premier’s address, Dato Sri Abdul Karim described the WAK Festival as a living testament to Sarawak’s unity, creativity, and community spirit, showcasing what can be achieved when the government, private sector, and people work hand in hand.
“Since its humble beginnings in 2017, WAK has evolved into a dynamic celebration of Sarawak’s arts, culture, and lifestyle. The WAK Festival, as it’s now known, is no ordinary event — it’s the creative engine driving the aspirations of our Post COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030,” he said.
He added that WAK embodies the collective passion and talent of Sarawakians, strengthening the State’s position as a regional creative hub powered by inclusivity and innovation.
Reaffirming the State Government’s commitment to nurturing the creative and cultural sectors, he highlighted that under the Sarawak Budget 2025, RM174 million has been allocated to his ministry, with RM45 million dedicated specifically to events and festivals, a clear signal of confidence in the creative economy as a catalyst for tourism and economic growth.
Dato Sri Abdul Karim also urged the private sector to play a stronger role in supporting Sarawak’s creative journey, describing such involvement as a strategic investment in talent, identity, and resilience.
“Our beloved Kuching is already celebrated as a City of Unity, a World Craft City, and a UNESCO City of Gastronomy. The WAK Festival breathes life into these accolades, turning them into real, shared experiences for Sarawakians and visitors alike,” he said.
He emphasised that WAK serves as a model of sustainable cultural growth, promoting low-carbon tourism, environmental awareness, and community-led creativity, all while celebrating Sarawak’s rich heritage.
Closing his speech, Dato Sri Abdul Karim expressed hope that the festival will continue to inspire, unite, and empower the people of Sarawak.
“May the WAK Festival shine as a beacon of inspiration, a driver of growth, and a powerful reminder that Sarawak’s vision under PCDS 2030 is fast becoming a sustainable reality for all,” he said. -UKASnews
