KUCHING: The launch of What About Kuching (WAK) Festival 2025 unfolded in a vibrant display of unity as communities across Sarawak came together at Pengkalan Sapi for the opening showcase themed 'Celebrating Us'.

The event began with a lively scene of colours and sounds as representatives of Sarawak’s diverse races took centre stage.

The Chinese community led with the rhythmic pulse of gendang, setting the tempo for the evening before the Bidayuh and Iban contingents joined in with their traditional spirit.

The riverfront burst into life as the dragon and lion dancers made their grand entrance, crossing the Darul Hana Bridge amid cheers and applause.

Soon after, the Malay performers took their turn, moving with grace and poise that reflected the harmony shared among Sarawakians.

The Iban segment began with a traditional miring ceremony to bless the occasion, followed by the graceful ngajat dance that embodied pride and unity.

Each community’s performance told a story of heritage and togetherness, their movements and music blending seamlessly into a single rhythm that echoed Sarawak’s collective identity.

The spirit of inclusivity filled the air as spectators watched cultures intertwine on one stage, celebrating not only diversity but also belonging.

As the sounds of drums faded into an orchestral harmony, performers representing all communities gathered under the evening sky, forming a powerful symbol of Sarawak’s unity in diversity.

It was a moment that captured the heart of Celebrating Us, a reminder that Sarawak’s beauty lies in its people standing together as one.

The WAK Festival 2025 continues throughout October with community powered programmes across Kuching, featuring art, culture and lifestyle experiences that reflect the State’s creative and collaborative spirit. -UKASnews
