BETONG: The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) will expedite decisions on requests for aid from victims to rebuild their houses or longhouses destroyed by fire.

Its Chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said, a state committee will decide on the assistances as soon as it has received reports from the respective Resident offices.

“The Resident Office will have to make an evaluation on the amount that the government should provide.

“Then upon receiving the report, the committee at SDMC will make its decision within a week,” he said after visiting a fire victim, Charles Tegalang in Nanga Tiga in Layar near here, on Tuesday.

Charles’ grocery shop and house were completely destroyed in a morning fire on March 28 recently.

Meanwhile, on the quotum, the Sarawak Deputy Premier said that the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government has a programme that provides assistance with a maximum amount of RM70,000.

“This applies to each individual house or individual unit of a longhouse. But of course, the state Welfare Department will be the first aid responder in giving basic daily necessities to the victims,” he added.

Earlier, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah who was accompanied by Betong Member of Parliament Dr Richard Rapu also handed over a RM388,000 contract to a contractor for the upgrading of a farm road at Kebun Cina in Spaoh.

The project is financed by the Betong Division Development Agency (BDDA).

Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah explained that BDDA, from last year to this year, had set aside a sum of RM30 million to upgrade 73 oil palm, pepper and rubber farm roads in the Bukit Saban areas. -UKASnews
