KUCHING: The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) joined the nationwide Program Pembersihan Mega Seluruh Negara – Hari Cuci Malaysia on Saturday in conjunction with World Clean-Up Day 2025, an initiative spearheaded by the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT).

The programme was graced by Sarawak Deputy Premier and Minister for Public Health, Housing, and Local Government, Sarawak, Datuk Amar Prof. Dr. Sim Kui Hian, who commended the active participation of local communities, schools, and civil society in cleaning and beautifying their surroundings.

Datuk Amar Dr. Sim praised the dedication of participants, noting that community participation is the backbone of environmental sustainability and a cleaner, healthier Sarawak begins with each of us taking responsibility for our environment.

He urged MBKS and all local councils across Sarawak to carry out innovative and impactful initiatives that go beyond one-off clean-up campaigns to cultivate civic consciousness, promote recycling, and reduce plastic waste.

"Environmental stewardship requires long-term commitment and creative approaches. I encourage all councils to continue engaging communities and schools to build a cleaner, greener Sarawak for future generations in align with the PCDS 2030 sustainable environment," he said.

The Federal Cabinet has designated the last Saturday of September each year as Hari Cuci Malaysia, encouraging Malaysians nationwide to come together under the spirit of gotong-royong.

The campaign focuses on cleaning public areas and neighbourhoods; closing illegal dumpsites; promoting recycling practices; and raising awareness on reducing single-use plastics.

This year, the initiative aims to set a new Malaysia Book of Records milestone with 100,000 participants nationwide taking part in simultaneous clean-up activities.

In Kuching South, more than 500 participants took part, covering major areas such as Kampung Lumba Kuda, Jalan Mendu, Jalan Padungan, Jalan Petanak, Jalan Blacksmith, Jalan Central Timur, and Jalan Abg Abdul Rahim.- UKASnews
