KUCHING: Sarawak has reiterated its commitment to strengthening strategic ties with Singapore by making the republic more than just a trading partner, but rather a key gateway to the global market.

Deputy Sarawak Secretary (Operation), Datu Hii Chang Kee said Singapore is seen as a hub for trade, innovation, finance and international networking that can complement Sarawak's strengths in resources, land and talent development.

"Sarawak hopes to collaborate by leveraging Singapore's expertise in innovation, finance, logistics and technology which will complement Sarawak's strengths in terms of resources, land area and talent development.

"Both parties can build partnerships that shape success, progress and sustainability, which is why Singapore is very strategic to Sarawak," he said.

He said this when speaking at the Opening Ceremony of the Business Matching Session with the Sarawak Trade and Tourism Office Singapore (STATOS) here, on Monday.

The STATOS Director said Sarawak is now shifting towards a new economic direction with a main focus on the green economy, with major investments in Samalaju, Bintulu, especially in green energy such as hydrogen, methanol, ammonia and green ammonia.

Datu Hii added that Sarawak intends to share energy with regional neighbours, especially in its efforts to become the 'ASEAN battery' to supply surplus energy resources, particularly green energy to Brunei, Kalimantan and also Singapore, where discussions have been held.

"Currently, almost 70 per cent of Sarawak's energy comes from green sources, which gives it an advantage because the international market emphasises countries with a high green energy mix.

"Sarawak sees great potential to become a supplier of clean and renewable energy to its neighbouring countries in the near future," he said.

Meanwhile, STATOS together with the Singapore Malay Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SMCCI) is organising a high-profile Business Mission to Kuching, Sarawak from 21 to 23 September 2025.

The mission brings together 15 companies from Singapore involving 22 participants from various industries including halal food and beverages, logistics, education, health, construction, digital technology and the creative sector.

Also present were Head of Mission and SMCCI Board Member, Raja Mohamad, STATOS Chief Executive Officer, Chew Chang Guan and other dignitaries. -UKASnews
