KUCHING: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) has once again put Kuching on the sustainability map by winning the 2025 JCI Malaysia Sustainable Development Award under SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production for its groundbreaking Bank Sampah project.

According to a statement, MBKS stood out from 30 finalists nationwide through two nominated projects, namely the Bank Sampah and the Kuching Natural Farmers’ Market.

“The Bank Sampah initiative ultimately clinched the award for its innovative approach to recycling and waste reduction through a reward-based system, turning household recyclables into valuable resources while fostering a culture of environmental responsibility,” it said.

This win continues MBKS’s impressive track record at the JCI SDG Awards, winning in 2020 with the IPeople/Qmunity App (SDG11), Let’s Recycle Together (SDG12) in 2021, upgrading of Traffic Garden & Kenyalang Park Open Spaces (SDG11) in 2023, and the iBuyBack App (SDG 11) in 2024.

MBKS Mayor, Dato Wee Hong Seng, praised MBKS councillors and staff for their teamwork and dedication, noting that this achievement reflects the passion and commitment of the MBKS family in building a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable Kuching South.

According to him, MBKS remains committed to community-driven projects aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals to enhance the quality of life for all residents. -UKASnews
