KUCHING: The Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative organised by Politeknik Kuching has proven to be a meaningful effort, simultaneously benefiting local residents and increasing awareness of electrical safety within the community.

Opar Assemblyman, Billy Sujang, said the programme not only provided direct assistance to the recipients, but also served as a practical platform to educate the public on safe wiring practices.

“Household wiring must be maintained and replaced after a certain period to prevent fire risks, especially in wooden houses. This ground-up approach is highly effective as it provides hands-on exposure for both students and villagers, beyond classroom theory,” he said when officiating the programme at SK St Teresa Stenggang Hall on Friday.

The two-day programme, held from 18 to 19 September, saw 22 Politeknik Kuching students conducting free rewiring works for two families in Kampung Stenggang, namely Jiking Nyundet and Santak Urong.

In addition, a workshop on electrical safety was conducted to equip villagers with basic knowledge on handling extension cords and light installations.

To inspire the younger generation, 20 students of SK St Teresa Stenggang also took part in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) activities aimed at nurturing their interest in innovation.

Following the event, Billy Sujang also visited the ongoing Ruh Puluoh–Sungai Situ Agricultural Road project in Kampung Stenggang, which is expected to improve farming access and strengthen basic infrastructure for the local community. -UKASnews
