KUCHING: The welcoming ceremony for the Kenyalang Warriors and Sarawak’s cheerleading team competing at the Borneo Games Kuching 2025 was held at the Sarawak Sports Village on Thursday night, lifting up the spirit of athletes and supporters alike ahead of the competition.

The event was officiated by the Deputy Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development, Datuk Dr Ripin Lamat, who reminded athletes that the final five days of preparation are crucial.

“The competition will begin on the 24th of September with badminton, followed by swimming, lawn bowls, archery, and tug of war. I urge all athletes to stay focused, maintain good health and diet, and be physically and mentally ready. Our goal is clear, Sarawak wants to win, and we want to be champions,” he stressed.

Datuk Dr Ripin also called on coaches and team managers to communicate openly with organisers should any issues arise, ensuring athletes remain in top condition ahead of the Borneo Games.

He expressed confidence that with discipline, fighting spirit, and endurance, Sarawak athletes will make their mark at the Borneo Games while also setting their sights on bigger stages such as SUKMA 2026 and the SEA Games 2027.

During a brief Q&A, Datuk Dr Ripin and Sarawak Sports Council Acting Chief Executive Officer, Khairul Nizam Morshidi, clarified updates on the blowpipe (sumpit) competition.

While initially excluded from medal contention, the traditional sport may still be featured as a demonstration event, pending confirmation at the delegation registration meeting on 20 September.

They also confirmed that West Kalimantan’s participation remains uncertain due to administrative changes, but contingents from Brunei, Sabah, Labuan, East Kalimantan, and Sarawak are confirmed.

Datuk Dr Ripin acknowledged that promotion of the Games began later than expected but assured that efforts are being intensified in the coming days.

“The Borneo Games are being revived after more than a decade as the last edition was in 2013 in Labuan, and the very first was held in Brunei in 1955. We are proud to host the third edition here in Sarawak. Let us make it count,” he said.
