SIBU: Public health challenges in Sarawak are shifting from communicable diseases such as tuberculosis (TB), dengue and HIV to non-communicable diseases (NCDs), including cancer, as well as road accidents, which have emerged as leading causes of death.

Sarawak Deputy Premier, Datuk Amar (Prof) Dr. Sim Kui Hian, said addressing these challenges requires cross-sector collaboration involving health, engineering, enforcement, and education to ensure a more holistic approach can be implemented.

He also underlined the importance of nurturing a young generation that not only excels internationally but also remains rooted in Sarawak’s identity.

“We want our youth to compete globally without forgetting their cultural roots. Everyone has a role to play in building the Sarawak nation,” he said.

He made the remarks at the opening of the 1st Borneo Health Summit & 41st Sarawak Health Conference at Kingwood Hotel, Sibu, on Wednesday.

Datuk Amar Dr. Sim, who brings experience from clinical practice to policymaking, also urged more educated individuals to take part in politics.

“Politics is the price we must pay in order to fight for the people,” he stressed.

He added that the Sarawak Health Conference, now in its 41st edition, reflects the state government’s continued commitment to building a sustainable healthcare system in support of Sarawak’s agenda to become a developed state by 2030. -UKASnews
