MIRI: The Veterinary Services Department (JPV) Miri vaccinated 197 dogs against rabies during a mass vaccination, licensing and microchipping programme at Taman Awam Miri on Sunday.
Pet owners brought 113 dogs for their first jab, while another 84 received booster shots.
JPV officers also microchipped 12 dogs and issued licences for 27, strengthening compliance with local regulations.
The programme attracted 116 pet owners, showing strong community support for rabies prevention and responsible pet ownership.
Sarawak Transport Minister and Senadin Assemblyman, Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, reported that JPV vaccinated 1,182 dogs in Miri between January and July.
He urged owners to renew rabies shots annually.
“Although Miri has remained rabies-free for several years, the community must not be complacent. JPV provides rabies vaccines for dogs free of charge, and owners must ensure their pets are protected every year,” he said.
Dato Sri Lee revealed that Miri has recorded 800 dog bite cases since early 2025.
He advised residents to stay vigilant and seek immediate treatment at clinics or hospitals if bitten.
While he also praised JPV’s mobile vaccination initiative for making the service more accessible.
“I urge more pet owners to come forward and vaccinate their animals to safeguard the community,” he added.
Authorities reminded owners not to disturb animals during feeding or nursing, to teach children safe interaction with pets, and to keep dogs and cats indoors to avoid contact with strays or wild animals.
They also advised residents to wash bite wounds immediately with soap and running water for at least 15 minutes and to seek prompt medical treatment. -UKASnews
