BINTULU: Sarawak will expand the role of its airline, AirBorneo, by deploying modified ATR aircraft as cargo planes to export agricultural produce to overseas markets, beginning with Singapore.
Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg, said the initiative is in line with the state government’s efforts to strengthen the agricultural sector through modern logistics support.
“The Sarawak Government, through AirBorneo, will provide modified ATR aircraft for cargo purposes to transport agricultural products to international markets, particularly Singapore,” he said.
He made the announcement when officiating Sarawak Agrofest 2025 at the Old Bintulu Airport on Saturday.
The Sarawak Premier further explained that the state has identified Tanjung Manis as a key production hub, particularly for crops such as pineapples, which will be exported to Singapore.
“Tanjung Manis will serve as a production centre, and products like pineapples will be exported to Singapore, which will in turn act as a distribution hub,” he said.
He emphasised that the initiative aligns with the state government’s aspiration to position Sarawak as a key player in the regional food industry.
“If countries such as Brazil and Denmark can succeed in their food industries, Sarawak must also establish itself on the global stage in this sector,” he stressed.
He added that the initiative will not only strengthen Sarawak’s agricultural sector but also create new income opportunities for the people through broader access to export markets. -UKASnews
