BINTANGOR: The roles of parents extend beyond guardianship, as they are the first and most influential educators in shaping their children’s character, intellect, and emotional development.
Meradong Assemblyman, Datuk Ding Kuong Hiing said education is not confined to classrooms alone, with parents needing to shoulder the bulk of responsibility in further nurturing their children.
“Teachers play a crucial role in instilling values and basic skills, while parents must continue reinforcing discipline, moral values, and healthy habits at home,” he said when speaking to officiate the 2025 Sarikei Parliamentary Constituency Parenting Skills Workshop held at the Dayang Bai Bintangor Hall on Thursday.
Datuk Ding cited studies showing that 80 per cent of a child’s brain development occurs within the first five years.
In this regard, he underscored the importance of early childhood development particularly in kindergartens and nurseries to ensure holistic growth.
The Meradong Assemblyman further stressed that nutritional education must also be supported by families through the preparation of balanced meals, ensuring children grow stronger, stay focused, and remain active.
“I urge parents to reduce unhealthy eating practices and prioritise wholesome food choices such as vegetables, fruits, and protein-rich meals.
“This is a long-term investment in our children who will be the future leaders and inheritors of our nation,” he added.
Meanwhile, Datuk Ding expressed gratitude for the successful organisation of the workshop and congratulated KEMAS Sarikei and all parties involved.
He called on the participants to actively apply and share the knowledge gained in their homes and communities, fostering a caring and proactive Sarikei parent community dedicated to nurturing intelligent, well-mannered, and patriotic children.
Also present were representative to the KEMAS Sarikei Officer, Joeremy Endang Runggai, and KEMAS Sarikei PAK Coordinator, Aleza Rebecca Grin. -UKASnews
