DENMARK: The Sarawak Government through the Ministry for Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development (M-FICORD) conducted an official visit to Denmark from 8 to 17 August 2025 to review modern farming technology and investment opportunities in the pig industry.
The visit, led by its Minister, Dato Sri Dr. Stephen Rundi Utom, visited several leading companies and institutions including Big Dutchmen which supplies equipment and processing equipment for animal feed, the Danish Food and Veterinary Council which regulates the movement of pigs, the DanBred Headquarters as the largest pig breeding company in Denmark, and Techocollege which offers training in the field of pig slaughtering.
The delegation also inspected the operations of Danish Finest Chicken which processes halal chicken and Danish Crown in Horsens, which is the most advanced pig slaughterhouse and processing plant in Europe.
The visit aimed to learn about the latest slaughtering technology, best practices in the livestock industry, and strategies for preventing diseases such as African Swine Fever (ASF) and Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD).
The delegation was also exposed to robotic technology and innovations in pig breeding practiced in Denmark.
Denmark is one of the largest pork producing countries in Europe with a livestock population reaching 11.45 million heads by 2024, contributing 30 per cent to its agricultural sector.
The country exports 90 per cent of its production to 140 countries including Germany and Poland.
Through this visit, Sarawak aims to formulate a more sustainable pig industry development strategy and attract new investments, in line with the aspiration to make Sarawak a net food exporter by 2030.
To date, Sarawak has exported 122,400 live pigs worth RM197.6 million to Singapore, and with the full operation of three major producing companies, the export value is expected to reach RM1 billion by 2030.
