KUCHING: The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) has reaffirmed its commitment to closer cooperation with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) in addressing crime and social issues in the city.

This follows a courtesy call on MBKS by Bukit Aman Deputy Director of the Counter Extremism and Social Threats Division, Dato’ Mohammad Shaharul Md Osman, aimed at strengthening strategic collaboration between both parties.

MBKS Mayor, Dato Wee Hong Seng, said the council was fully committed to supporting the police in ensuring public safety and harmony.

“We share the same goal of keeping Kuching safe and harmonious, and MBKS is ever ready to work with PDRM to address crime and social ills,” he said.

During the meeting, Dato Wee raised concerns over the proliferation of online gambling activities in Kuching, including those operating from premises disguised as coffee shops or convenience stores.

He urged Members of Parliament for Kuching and Stampin to push for immediate and decisive enforcement action by the Minister of Home Affairs and the Minister of Communications and Multimedia, stressing that such matters should go beyond being highlighted during parliamentary debates, where they risk being diluted among numerous issues raised by 222 MPs.

Dato Wee also briefed the visiting delegation on MBKS’s existing safety measures, which include the installation of CCTV cameras at strategic locations, the deployment of police wardens for traffic control, and joint monitoring with enforcement agencies to curb illegal activities.

“A safe city is the foundation of a thriving community. Through stronger collaboration with PDRM and firm, immediate enforcement actions, we can safeguard Kuching for all its residents,” he added. -UKASnews
