BINTULU: The Bintulu Marathon 2025 stood out as a truly special edition this year, thanks to its unique route that took nearly 9,000 participants from 21 countries across the iconic Tun Taib Mahmud Bridge, offering a memorable new experience for all.
The 4.8-kilometre bridge, officially launched on 23 July, is not just a symbol of Sarawak’s advancing infrastructure but was, for the very first time, incorporated as a central stretch of Bintulu’s most prestigious marathon event.
Participants were treated not only to a test of endurance but also to breathtaking views of the Kuala Kemena River and the modern cityscape of Bintulu — seen from a rare and spectacular vantage point.
According to Bintulu Development Authority (BDA) General Manager, Datu Muhamad Yakup Kari, the iconic bridge route added significant appeal to the event, especially for attracting international runners.
“Running on this bridge wasn’t just challenging — it was awe-inspiring. It added a whole new dimension to the marathon,” he said during a press conference after officiating the marathon on Sunday.
But beyond being a sporting spectacle, the Bintulu Marathon 2025 also boosted the local economy, drawing thousands of runners — many accompanied by family — who contributed to increased business for hotels, eateries, and local vendors. The event has also helped inject fresh energy into tourism in Central Sarawak.
Datu Yakup also praised the enthusiastic support of the Bintulu community, who came out in full force along the route to cheer on and assist the runners.
“Their presence along the route was a huge morale boost to participants and truly brought the event to life with a strong sense of community spirit,” he added.
Buoyed by the success of this year’s edition, organisers have already confirmed that the Bintulu Marathon 2026 will take place on 2 August 2026.
Datu Yakup expressed confidence that the marathon will continue to grow, evolving into one of Sarawak’s signature sporting events, capable of attracting even more runners from around the globe. -UKASnews
