MIRI: The Padang Kerbau and Jalan Cahaya areas have been identified as critical locations that will be prioritised in the implementation of the RM50 million flood mitigation project by the Sarawak Government.
Sarawak Minister for Transport, Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin said the two areas are often affected by flash floods due to inefficient drainage systems and water runoff from nearby hills.
As such, river and drain deepening works will begin at these sites first.
“I’ve requested the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) to prioritise the most affected areas such as Padang Kerbau and Jalan Cahaya.
“Don’t wait for the full implementation of the plan which may take two years. Let’s resolve the issues in the critical areas first,” he said during a working visit to both project sites on Monday.
The visit covered the proposed clearing and desilting existing earth stream drain at Jalan Cahaya, which is currently under tender, as well as the ongoing clearing and desilting works for earth drain at Pujut Padang Kerbau.
According to Dato Sri Lee, the major issue in these areas is the absence of a culvert beneath the road, which causes water to stagnate and prevents smooth flow.
“We will construct a culvert across the road to facilitate water flow and ensure the drainage system is fully upgraded,” he added.
He also highlighted challenges involving a private-owned piece of land situated on a key drainage route, where the landowner has refused to grant temporary access.
“We will continue negotiations, but if no other solution is found, the government may need to acquire the land in the public interest,” he said.
Dato Sri Lee further explained that the flood mitigation project forms part of the Drainage System Improvement Plan for Sungai Dalam, covering areas such as Taman Tunku, Jalan Cahaya, Padang Kerbau, and Lopeng Baru.
He also expressed appreciation to DID for their ongoing cooperation in realising a comprehensive flood mitigation plan for Miri. -UKASnews
