KUCHING: The proposal to add Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) seats is timely to ensure that the duties of representatives can be carried out fairly and effectively.

Tamin Assemblyman, Ir. Christopher Gira said, the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (Composition of Membership) Bill 2025 is not just an administrative change but an important step in line with the principles of balanced development, effective governance and the spirit of the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).

“The addition of 17 DUN seats is an important adjustment to our democratic structure. I also hope that the addition of Parliamentary seats for Sarawak will also be tabled in the Dewan Rakyat.

“As a founding partner in the Federation of Malaysia, Sarawak is entitled to fair and balanced representation not only in this House, but also in Parliament.

“This is not just a matter of numbers, but a matter of constitutional justice and regional balance,” he said when debating the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (Composition of Membership) Bill 2025 in conjunction with a Special Meeting at the Sarawak DUN on Monday.

In this regard, he added, Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) through the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) Delimitation Committee has proposed eight DUN constituencies including one new Parliamentary constituency.

He said, the proposed new DUN seats involve Bukit Kelankang which is formed from Bukit Begunan and Simanggang, Mapai or Sibu Jaya from Ngemah and Dudong, Bukit Arip from Tamin and Kakus, Tubau from Murum and Kakus, Pengejau from Bekenu and Marudi, Medamit from Batu Danau, Anau from Jepak and Kakus and Sungai Plan from Samalaju.

Apart from that, he said, there is also a proposed new Parliamentary seat, namely Bukit Buan which will be formed from the Kakus and Tamin constituencies within the Selangau Parliamentary boundaries.

"The proposal was made based on the distribution of voters, geographical size and the need to improve service delivery, especially in rural areas," he said. -UKASnews
