MIRI: A total of 18 local journalists took part in a journalism workshop titled “AI in the Newsroom”, organised by the Northern Sarawak Journalists Association (NSJA) in collaboration with Curtin University.

The one-day workshop was held at a hotel here on Friday.

The closing ceremony and presentation of certificates to participants were officiated by Sarawak Minister of Transport, Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin.

The workshop aimed to equip journalists with essential knowledge and skills in the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in journalism, especially as the industry continues to face rapid changes and mounting challenges.

In his speech, Dato Sri Lee described the initiative as timely, given the fast-evolving media landscape.
“I strongly encourage journalists to keep learning and acquiring new knowledge.

“AI will not replace journalists, but it is a tool that can help enhance the quality and standards of journalism. However, the use of AI must also be guided by ethics to prevent misuse,” he emphasised.

Dato Sri Lee also proposed that Curtin University consider developing a short course module on AI in journalism, which could be made accessible to all media practitioners in Sarawak. -UKASnews
