MIRI: Three individuals have been officially appointed as Community Leaders and Village Chiefs (KMKK) in Miri during a formal ceremony held at the Main Meeting Room of the Miri Division Resident’s Office on Friday.
The certificate presentation ceremony, organised by the Miri District Office, was officiated by Sarawak Minister of Transport and Senadin Assemblyman, Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin.
The appointees include two Community Leaders—Pemanca Ujut Rahman for Miri District and Penghulu Andara Salleh for Kampung Bakam, Berjaya, and Luak—as well as one Village Chief, Rengga Bangkong, who will serve Rumah Panting, Sungai Teniku in Miri.
All three will serve a term beginning 1 January 2025 until 31 December 2026.
In his address, Dato Sri Lee highlighted the vital role of KMKKs as the bridge between the government and the grassroots community.
“The Sarawak government always prioritises all communities.
“This reflects our inclusive policy, where we want all citizens - regardless of religion or culture - to work together towards the progress of the state,” he said.
He also underscored the importance of racial unity and cross-cultural understanding among community leaders, urging them to familiarise themselves with the customs and traditions of various ethnic groups so they can serve effectively as connectors between different communities.
Dato Sri Lee further suggested that the District Office organise special orientation sessions for newly appointed community leaders, particularly for those stepping into the role for the first time.
Also present at the event were Deputy Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development, Datuk Dr Ripin Lamat, Deputy Health Minister, Dato Lukanisman Awang Sauni and Miri Division Resident, Galong Luang. -UKASnews
