KUCHING: A total of RM50 million has been allocated to implement 46 periodic maintenance projects on federal roads in Sarawak this year, involving pavement and non-pavement works under the Federal Road Maintenance Contract 2025.

Minister of Works (KKR), Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the allocation is part of the overall fund of RM400 million approved by the Ministry of Finance through the 2025 National Budget, specifically for periodic maintenance works for Bumiputera contractors nationwide.

“This RM50 million allocation covers the implementation of 46 Work Orders. Out of the 46 Work Orders, 25 are for Periodic Pavement Works such as road resurfacing and patching, while the remaining 21 involve Periodic Non-Pavement Works.

“The breakdown of work orders by contractor category includes six for G1 contractors, 14 for G2, two for G3, and 24 for G4 contractors,” he said.

He said this when officiating the Periodic Works Ballot Draw Ceremony for G1-G4 Contractors under the Sarawak Federal Road Maintenance Contract 2025, held at Sheraton Kuching Hotel on Monday.

Dato Sri Alexander noted that the draw is part of the MADANI Government’s initiative to empower small and medium Bumiputera contractors through a selection system that is fair, transparent, and merit-based, while also strengthening the local economy.

“This ballot draw programme is not new. It was introduced in 2020 and has proven successful in boosting the competitiveness and marketability of Bumiputera contractors.

“A transparent process will yield quality outcomes, and we will continue to improve it year after year,” he added.

The Kapit Member for Parliament emphasised that every contract awarded is not merely a commercial opportunity but a responsibility that must be carried out with integrity, accountability, and professionalism.

“Works that do not comply with specifications not only affect infrastructure quality but can endanger lives and road users. We cannot compromise on safety,” he stressed.

He also called on all successful contractors to fully understand the terms of their contracts, manage manpower, finances, and project execution effectively, and adhere to the project schedule and quality standards set.

At the same time, he told the Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR) to continue monitoring the quality of contractors’ work.

Meanwhile, KKR in a statement said the scope of periodic pavement maintenance works includes mill and pave, Cold In-Place Recycling (CIPR), overlay, and re-construction, while periodic non-pavement maintenance involves tasks such as repainting road lines, maintaining and repairing road signs, constructing road kerbs, upgrading drainage, and other related works.

Also present were JKR Sarawak Director, Dr. Cassidy Morris, representatives of the DAL HCM Sdn Bhd concession company, and G1 to G4 contractors who were eligible to participate in the draw. -UKASnews
