LAWAS: The construction of the Floating Mosque in Kampung Punang, located along the Lawas coastline, is now nearly complete and is expected to become a new landmark and major tourist attraction in northern Sarawak.

Sarawak Deputy Premier and Bukit Sari Assemblyman, Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, said the mosque—built at a cost of RM6.88 million—has reached 99.6 per cent completion, with only the finishing touches on the interior decorations remaining.

He said this during a press conference following a site visit to the mosque project in Kampung Punang, Lawas on Saturday, which was also attended by Lawas Member of Parliament, Dato Henry Sum Agong.

"The construction is now progressing with a focus on interior decoration. I have proposed several improvements to the mosque’s interior, including designated spaces for hosting events and religious activities," he said.

During the same press conference, Datuk Amar Awang Tengah also revealed plans for the proposed Punang Waterfront development, which has been instructed to begin next year.

"I have also been briefed on the Waterfront project, which is now under the purview of the Regional Corridor Development Authority (RECODA). I’ve directed that it be implemented next year. The cost of constructing the waterfront has yet to be determined.

"In addition, this area offers unique attractions such as its beach and coastal views, traditional villages, local cuisine and culture. It holds strong potential to become a destination for both domestic and international tourists," he noted.

According to him, the development of the area will be further strengthened by the construction of a new road connecting Kuala Lawas – Punang – Kampung Awat-Awat, which will eventually link to the new Lawas Airport.

He added that a comprehensive master plan has already been drawn up to develop the area, including the construction of a tourism resort and other supporting infrastructure.

He stressed that this development will create economic opportunities for local small and medium entrepreneurs, and encouraged the local community to seize these opportunities to improve their livelihoods and income.

"This development will open up economic opportunities for local small and medium entrepreneurs. The local community should seize these available opportunities to improve their standard of living and increase their income," he said. -UKASnews
