KUALA LUMPUR: The Sarawak government welcomes skilled workers from Peninsular Malaysia to work in various new sectors to meet the needs of certain industries.

Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg said that Sarawak needs skilled workers from all over Malaysia to continue spurring the state’s development.

"Sarawak cannot develop the state on its own; we also need skilled workers from outside to develop Sarawak.

"For example, the Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) project is headed by a person from the Peninsula, as the person has the necessary skills required.

"If Sarawakians have the skills, they can also be leaders. For example, at the methanol plant, the head is a Sarawakian from Sibu because he has experience from Petronas, but for others, we also need people from outside.

“I can assure you, we need many skilled workers because Sarawak’s economy is a new economy, not a conventional one,” he said.

He said this during a Sarawak Budget Discussion town hall session organised by the Persatuan Mahasiswa Sarawak of Universiti Malaya here, on Saturday.

Meanwhile, he also stated that Universiti Malaya (UM) has begun efforts to establish a law faculty in Sarawak.

With this, Datuk Patinggi Abang Zohari said law students from UM will study laws that are also related to the state.

“So students will study here (Sarawak) for two years and at UM, another two years. This means we will have a UM law faculty in Sarawak, and later, laws about what happens in Sarawak will also be studied,” he explained.

Also present were Sarawak Minister for Utility and Telecommunication, Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi, Sarawak State Secretary, Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, Sarawak Deputy Minister for Energy and Environmental Sustainability, Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni, Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Law, MA63 and State-Federal Relations), Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali, Sarawak Deputy State Secretary (Economic Planning and Development), Datu Dr Muhammad Abdullah Zaidel, UM Vice-Chancellor, Dato Sri Professor Ir Dr Noor Azuan Abu Osman, Sarawak State Attorney General, Datu Saferi Ali, Legal Advisor in the Sarawak Premier’s Department, Dato Sri Talat Mahmood Abdul Rashid, and Sarawakian students from various universities in Peninsular Malaysia. -UKASnews
