ABERDEEN: Sarawak has reaffirmed its position as Southeast Asia’s clean energy frontrunner at the Energy Export Conference (EEC) 2025, where it unveiled an ambitious vision for the region’s energy transition and export ambitions.

In his keynote address, Deputy Minister for Energy and Environmental Sustainability, Datuk Dr. Hazland Abang Hipni, said Sarawak’s transition is anchored in “strong policy commitment, sustained investment in innovation, and robust regional cooperation.”

“Sarawak is proud to be a pioneer in ASEAN when it comes to clean energy development. Our participation at EEC 2025 reflects our readiness to forge new global partnerships and export low-carbon energy solutions to the world,” he said.

He outlined Sarawak’s integrated strategy built on four key pillars—renewable energy, natural gas, carbon capture and storage (CCS), and hydrogen—to drive sustainable growth and regional resilience.

With over 70 per cent of electricity already generated from hydropower, Sarawak is expanding its renewable capacity and power export infrastructure to West Kalimantan, Brunei, Sabah, and soon Singapore, reinforcing its role as the “Battery of ASEAN.”

Sarawak also leads Malaysia in natural gas reserves and CCS potential, while pioneering hydrogen development through flagship projects and targeted legislation to attract global investors.

Meanwhile, Deputy Sarawak Secretary (Economic Planning & Development), Dato Sri Dr. Muhammad Abdullah Zaidi, said platforms like EEC are vital for building global energy partnerships.

“Our presence here in Aberdeen is a statement of intent. Sarawak is open for business, open for innovation, and ready to lead in clean energy exports,” he said.

State-owned utility Sarawak Energy Berhad shared long-term plans for cross-border grid integration and sustainability, while SEDC Energy highlighted active collaborations with Japanese and South Korean firms in developing hydrogen and ammonia export capabilities.

Backed by strategic roadmaps, policy clarity, and international recognition from the World Economic Forum, Sarawak’s clean energy push is unlocking investment and creating high-value jobs.

With International Energy Week 2025 and SAREF 4.0 on the horizon, Sarawak is inviting more global partners to join its clean and inclusive energy journey. -UKASnews
