KUCHING: The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) in collaboration with the Kuching Autistic Association has officially launched Ausome Park, an inclusive playground specially designed for autistic children and their families.

Sarawak Deputy Premier, Datuk Amar Professor Dr. Sim Kui Hian said the initiative aims to encourage social interaction for autistic children within the community while serving as a form of therapy for them and their families.

“This group is often marginalised, but we want more than just the government taking action, we want society to also be aware and involved.

“No matter how small your contribution is, it means a lot to them,” he told reporters after officiating the launch of Ausome Park at the MBKS grounds on Thursday.

The Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government also addressed the persistent stigma surrounding mental health and autism, calling for outdated mindsets to be abandoned in favour of a more open and inclusive society, a vision aligned with the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.

He further explained that this issue is also linked to the stigma of society that still views mental health negatively.

“However, in this modern era, mental health issues are becoming more prevalent due to digital lifestyles, including the use of social media and exposure to online abuse.

“Therefore, old perceptions of mental health are no longer relevant and must evolve with the times,” he said.

Meanwhile, MBKS Mayor, Dato Wee Hong Seng said the idea for the park originated last year when MBKS was exploring funding for a children’s playground.

He explained that the playground is not only for the benefit of autistic children, but also serves as a platform to raise public awareness, as the MBKS Garden Park is frequented daily by many visitors.

“This Ausome Park is not only built for autistic children to play, but because the MBKS Garden Park is also used by many people every day, it is part of an awareness campaign for the community,” he said.

Therefore, he called on the community to participate and contribute to the efforts of MBKS and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) involved in autism-related initiatives, particularly in future efforts to build more inclusive playgrounds. -UKASnews
