PADAWAN: The Brarak and Bipajak Gawai Bisegu cultural celebration, organised by the Segu Bunuk Association, has been proposed for inclusion in the Sarawak Tourism Calendar — a move that could elevate the event into a major cultural tourism attraction.

Deputy Minister for Transport, Datuk Dr. Jerip Susil, voiced the proposal after witnessing the growing popularity of the annual programme, which he believes holds strong potential as a significant community-driven tourism event.

“Last year, the parade featured only six contingents. This year, the number has grown to 21, with an estimated 2,000 to 3,000 participants — a clear sign of its rising appeal,” he told reporters after attending the event in Kampung Segu Benuk on Monday. The festival is now in its third edition.

Dr. Jerip revealed that plans are underway to formalise the Gawai parade as an official annual event in the state’s tourism calendar.

“Each year, we will continue to refine and expand the programme, depending on the level of community participation and public response.

“With the involvement of 21 contingents this year, we are confident the festival will continue to grow and feature even more engaging activities in the years ahead,” he said.

Beyond fostering unity among the Bidayuh community, Dr Jerip emphasised that such events play a crucial role in showcasing local heritage to visiting tourists — positioning it as a vibrant and competitive cultural tourism product.

The Mambong Assemblyman added that these celebrations offer a valuable platform for communities to express their identity, especially through traditional attire and shared cultural pride.

“Gawai is a time for us to come together and celebrate as one. The enthusiastic turnout shows that people recognise this season as the perfect opportunity for unity,” he said.

Also present at the event were Puncak Borneo MP Datuk Willie Mongin, Special Administrative Officer of the Greater Kuching Coordinated Development Agency (GKCDA), Datu Ik Pahon Joyik and Administrative Officer in charge of the Padawan Sub-District Office, Julius Scott Sapong. -UKASnews
