MIRI: In the spirit of Gawai Dayak, two Sarawak leaders, Minister for Transport, Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin and Mayor of Miri City, Adam Yii Siew Sang, joined in the celebration at the Gawai open house hosted by Miri Orang Ulu Women’s Association (PWOUM) Chairperson, Kijan Toynbee at her home in Pujut 3B, here on Monday.

Dato Sri Lee arrived at 9 a.m. to extend festive greetings, followed by Adam Yii at around 11 a.m., warmly welcomed by the host and guests alike.

Speaking to the media, Dato Sri Lee extended Gawai wishes to all celebrants, and expressed his pride in Sarawak’s long-standing open house tradition.

“In Sarawak, the open house is a meaningful practice that unites people of all races and religions. This 'Segulai Sejalai ' spirit is the true strength of our state,” he said.

The Senadin Assemblyman also shared his experience attending the Sarawak-level Gawai Dayak Open House at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK), describing it as a vibrant display of unity and togetherness among Sarawakians.

Dato Sri Lee stressed the importance of nurturing this spirit of harmony, especially among the younger generation, to ensure a prosperous and united future for Sarawak.

“Sarawak is a colourful state. Our diversity in culture, ethnicity and faith is what makes us unique and strong. This must be preserved and appreciated by all,” he added.

He also lauded the state government’s inclusive policies, including the establishment of a special unit to support the needs of various religious groups in Sarawak.

The presence of both leaders added cheer to the open house, further strengthening the bonds between leaders and the local community as they came together to celebrate Gawai in a warm and harmonious atmosphere. -UKASnews
