KUCHING: A sea of colours, culture and cheer filled the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) as Sarawak top leaders and thousands of individuals came together for the vibrant 2025 Gawai Dayak Open House celebration on Sunday.
The joyful gathering was graced by Sarawak Governor, Tun Pehin Sri Dr. Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and his wife, Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi alongside Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg and his wife, Puan Sri Datuk Amar Juma’ani Tun Tuanku Bujang.
Datuk Patinggi Abang Zohari arrived to warm greetings at 10.30 a.m., followed shortly after by Tun Pehin Sri Dr. Wan Junaidi at 10.40 a.m.
Both were received by Sarawak Deputy Premier, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas in a reception that echoed the spirit of unity and festivity.
Adding a symbolic touch to the morning was the traditional Gawai Toast led by the Sarawak Governor, an age-old gesture marking the official launch of the Gawai Open House and a blessing for peace, prosperity and community togetherness.
From as early as 9 a.m., the BCCK was abuzz with more than 5,000 attendees, a melting pot of Sarawak’s rich ethnic diversity, all coming together to enjoy cultural performances, traditional cuisine and the warm camaraderie that defines the Gawai spirit.
The open house is a platform to celebrate the state’s multi-ethnic harmony, bringing together people of all backgrounds to honour Dayak traditions while fostering shared values of unity and mutual respect.
Also adding to the festive atmosphere were other high-ranking figures, including Sarawak Deputy Premier, Datuk Amar Professor Dr. Sim Kui Hian, Speaker of the Sarawak Legislative Assembly, Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nasar, Sarawak and Federal Cabinet Ministers, Sarawak Secretary, Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, Deputy Ministers, department heads and distinguished guests.
With traditional dances, music and local delicacies on full display, the celebration offered an immersive cultural experience for all, from seasoned Gawai celebrants to first-time visitors.
As the event wraps up at 2 p.m., the spirit of Gawai — of thanksgiving, hope and solidarity — continues to echo across Sarawak, reinforcing the state’s enduring commitment to harmony and shared prosperity. -UKASnews
