MIRI: The upgrading works at Miri Airport are actively being carried out by Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB), with encouraging progress reported.
Sarawak Minister for Transport, Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin said the works include the refurbishment of toilets, replacement of escalators, upgrades to the air-conditioning system, repairs at Apron Bay 1, and the installation of a new aerobridge.
“Miri Airport, which has handled more than two million passengers annually since 2013, is facing serious wear and tear as its facilities have aged over two decades.
“Therefore, these upgrades are essential to ensure the comfort and safety of airport users,” Dato Sri Lee said.
He spoke after chairing a meeting on the progress of the Miri Airport upgrade project at the MAHB Meeting Room, here on Friday.
Dato Sri Lee added, several works are already underway and are expected to be completed between July 2025 and February 2026.
He also proposed that clear signage be installed and temporary facilities provided to ensure the comfort of passengers, including senior citizens and persons with disabilities (PWDs), throughout the maintenance period.
During the same meeting, the Senadin Assemblyman also presented several long-term proposals to MAHB such as the construction of a business jet terminal, a new cargo terminal, and repainting of the terminal building.
In addition, he said that a preliminary design study for the construction of a new terminal is currently in progress and is expected to be completed by November 2025.
“I’m pleased that all the requests we made are now being implemented, and I’m very satisfied with the progress of this project.
“These upgrades not only improve existing facilities, but also pave the way for a larger airport development, positioning Miri as a key transport and investment hub in the Borneo region,” he emphasised. -UKASnews
