SIBU: Art plays a pivotal role as a bridge of unity among multi-ethnic communities and serves as a catalyst for positive social change.
This was emphasised by Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government, Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee when officiating an art exhibition titled ‘Encounter’, jointly organised by the Borneo Evangelical Mission (BEM) and the Hosanna Christian Church at the Hosanna Care Centre, here on Thursday.
According to the Pelawan Assemblyman, art in all its forms—be it music, dance, theatre, painting, literature or film—is a universal language that transcends politics, ethnicity, religion and background.
“In a world often focused on differences, art reminds us of our shared humanity. It plays an important role in fostering cultural understanding and societal unity,” he said.
He also commended two local artists, Clara Ling and Ngu Nei Cui, for producing and co-curating the exhibition, which he described as a meaningful expression of cultural and spiritual journey.
He noted that Sarawak, with its rich tapestry of ethnic groups, diverse customs and languages, holds great potential to use art as a powerful unifying tool.
“Art tells the story of who we are, where we come from, and where we are heading. It allows us to see life from another person’s perspective and provides a safe space for dialogue and expression,” he added.
He also reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to supporting the development of the creative sector, citing initiatives such as the Borneo Cultures Museum, completed in 2022, which is now the largest museum in Malaysia and the second largest in Southeast Asia, as well as the upcoming Sarawak Performing Arts Centre expected to be completed by 2027.
However, he stressed that the effort to elevate the status of the arts should not rest solely on the government’s shoulders but is instead a shared mission for all Sarawakians.
He also expressed hope that the ‘Encounter’ exhibition would inspire the public to lead lives guided by integrity, compassion, justice, and spiritual values. -UKASnews
