KUCHING: Sarawak is taking strategic steps to become a leading semiconductor hub in the region amidst the ongoing chip war between the United States and China.

According to Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg, the chip war has resulted in global players such as Intel, TSMC and Samsung reacting to diversify production to Southeast Asia, India, Europe, and the US, marking a strategic shift from concentrated manufacturing to geopolitically stable and neutral regions.

“Thus, it is timely that we have established the Semiconductor Strategic Framework to position Sarawak as a high-value semiconductor hub in the region.

“Our vision is clear, to make Sarawak a competitive, resilient, and future-ready player in the global semiconductor industry,” he said.

He spoke during his winding-up session at the 19th Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) Sitting on Wednesday.

Datuk Patinggi Abang Zohari added that the framework would drive investments across the entire semiconductor value chain.
“This, in turn, will boost Sarawak’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by attracting high-impact investments, fostering innovation, and building a talent-driven ecosystem for industrial transformation,” he explained. -UKASnews
