KUCHING: The Sarawak Government has set a target for renewable energy to account for up to 70 per cent of the state’s total energy mix by the year 2035 as part of its strategy to enhance energy security and achieve sustainable development.

According to Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg, this commitment is outlined under the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030) as well as the forthcoming Sarawak Energy Transition Policy (SET-P).

“The achievement of this target will be supported by the development of renewable energy sources through the Independent Power Producer (IPP) model, with the goal of reaching a total installed capacity of 10 gigawatts (GW) by 2030 and 15 GW by 2035,” he said.

He spoke during his winding-up session at the 19th Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) Sitting on Wednesday.

The Sarawak Premier also noted increasing private sector interest in large-scale projects such as solar energy, biomass, and waste-to-energy conversion technologies.

“To fully support this momentum, the Sarawak Government will focus on upgrading the energy transmission and distribution system, as well as strengthening the raw material supply chain for biomass,” he added. -UKASnews
