KUCHING: Sarawak now holds full autonomy over gas distribution, no longer being subject to the Gas Supply Act 1993 or specific subsections of the Petroleum Development Act 1974.

Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg confirmed that the matter was finalised through a Joint Declaration between the Federal Government and the Sarawak Government, recognising the Distribution of Gas Ordinance (DGO) 2016 as the applicable law in Sarawak.

“The Sarawak Government will implement plans to increase gas production, ensure its sustainable use by industries, and support the generation of clean energy.

“This is crucial to ensure Sarawak achieves its goal of becoming a Low Carbon Gas Hub in Kuching,” he said during his winding-up speech at the 19th Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) Sitting on Wednesday.

He further elaborated that this initiative has the potential to contribute up to RM120 billion to Sarawak’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and create 185,000 high-income jobs, with PETROS playing a key role as resource manager and main implementer of gas infrastructure. -UKASnews
